Learn the Basics of the Rummy Card Game
Rummy is a classic card game typically played with two standard decks, each including Jokers. The objective is to make a valid declaration by forming proper sets and sequences using the cards you draw and discard.
During gameplay, you’ll interact with two piles:
- A closed deck, where cards are picked blindly
- An open pile, made up of discarded cards from other players
How to Play Rummy
Getting Started
Rummy is a strategic card game played with two decks, each including Jokers. Each participant is dealt 13 cards. The objective is to arrange these cards into valid sets and sequences, then make a correct declaration to win. There are two piles in the game: Closed deck – cards are drawn blindly. Open deck – cards discarded by other players. To win, players must organize their hand into at least two valid sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence. Additional cards can form more sequences or sets.
Card Values
Cards rank from Ace to King: A, 2–10, J, Q, K Cards rank from Ace to King in the following order: A, 2–10, J, Q, K. Face cards (A, J, Q, K): 10 points each Number cards: Worth their face value (e.g., 6 = 6 points).
1. Pure Sequence
A pure sequence is a group of 3 or more consecutive cards from the same suit without any Joker or wild card.
Examples: 5♥ 6♥ 7♥ 3♠ 4♠ 5♠ 6♠
2. Impure Sequence
This includes 3 or more consecutive cards from the same suit, using one or more Joker cards to substitute missing cards.
Examples: 6♦ 7♦ Q♠ 9♦ (Q♠ used as wild Joker for 8♦) 5♠ Q♥ 7♠ 8♠ PJ (Q♥ as wild joker for 6♠; PJ = Printed Joker for 9♠)
Forming Sets
A set contains 3 or more cards of the same value but from different suits. You can use wild cards or Jokers to complete a set. Valid Set Examples: A♥ A♣ A♦ 8♦ 8♣ 8♠ 8♥ 5♦ 5♣ PJ (Printed Joker as 5♥) 5♦ 5♣ Q♠ PJ (Q♠ and PJ used as wild jokers for missing 5s)
Invalid Set Examples: Q♥ Q♥ Q♦ (Duplicate suit makes it invalid) 7♠ 7♥ 7♦ 7♠ Q♥ (Two 7♠ cards – invalid) Example of a Valid 13-Card Grouping: Sequences: 2♥ 3♥ 4♥ 5♥ | 5♣ 6♣ 7♣ 8♣ Set: 5♦ 5♣ PJ Q♥ Q♠ (valid with jokers)
Basic Rummy Gameplay
Game begins with 2–6 players and 2 decks (each with a Joker). Every player receives 13 cards. A random Joker is chosen. Players draw and discard cards in turns to form required sequences and sets.
To win, one must declare after arranging: At least 2 valid sequences One of them must be pure
Winning Tips
Focus on Pure Sequence Early: It’s a must for valid declaration. Discard High-Point Cards: Replace with Jokers to reduce loss in case you lose. Avoid Picking from Open Pile: It reveals your strategy. Use Smart Cards: Middle cards like 7 can connect both sides. Use Jokers Wisely: Only for sets and impure sequences — not pure ones. Double Check Before Declaring: Mistakes lead to instant loss.
Common Rummy Terms
Rummy Table A virtual table where 2–6 players compete in a rummy game. Joker & Wild Cards Printed Joker: Always present in the deck. Wild Joker: Randomly selected at game start. Both can replace any card in sets or impure sequences. Draw & Discard Each player draws a card (from closed or open deck) and discards one in return — part of each turn. Sorting Organizing your hand at game start using the “Sort” button helps prevent confusion.

Steps
How Winnings Are Calculated in Rummy Cash Games
Points Rummy
Winnings = (Total Points of All Losing Players) × (Point Value) – Platform Fee
Table Value: ₹860 Point Value: ₹4 Losing Player Points: 45, 78, 23, 20, 40 Total = (4 × [45+78+23+20+40]) = ₹824 Final Winnings = ₹824 – rummy fee
Pool Rummy
Winnings = Entry Fee × Number of Players – Rummy Fee
5 players join a ₹50 entry pool → Total pool = ₹250 Winner earns ₹250 minus platform charges
Deals Rummy
The winner claims all chips lost by others.
Winnings = Sum of all opponents' points (each point = 1 chip)
If other players lose with 10, 20, 30, 35, and 40 points, The winner collects = 10 + 20 + 30 + 35 + 40 = 135 chips
Valid 13-Card Declaration: Example Combination
A player can legally declare their hand when the following valid groupings are formed:
- One Pure Sequence of 4 consecutive cards from the same suit
- One Impure Sequence of 3 cards, where 8♣ acts as a wild joker
- Set 1 with 3 cards of the same rank from different suits
- Set 2 of 3 cards, using a Printed Joker as a substitute
This structure ensures a valid declaration under standard rummy
rules.
